What I Wish I Had Known: Transitioning from Public to Academic Libraries
- Presenter(s): Christopher Proctor, Alex Stepp, Rachel Getz
-
Description: Despite similar creeds and duties, public and academic libraries remain relatively siloed. For the presenters, this resulted in some shock when transitioning from public librarianship to academia. We will discuss what we wish we had known before moving from public to academic libraries by comparing their objectives, workflows, and hierarchical structures. Topics include preparing for the academic interview, transitioning from informal evaluation to a formalized culture of assessment, learning the language of academia, the increased focus on teaching instead of providing knowledge, differences in programming, and a comparison of governing bodies. Additional discussion will include recommendations on utilizing partnerships to develop networks of communication across library systems. The goal of this presentation is to help anyone interested in moving to academic libraries better prepare for that transition, while also demystifying the more esoteric elements of academic librarianship.
