Breakout Block 4 Sessions

Monday, March 10, 2024 - 10:30 – 11:20 am

  • LEGO Printing with the Provisional Press
    • Presenter(s): Georgia Geis
    • Description: School-age, teen and even adult patrons would enjoy this hands-on program using flat LEGO® blocks called tiles to make a design and a Provisional press to print their designs. I would demonstrate how patrons would make and print their designs. I have done this program with School-age kids during Summer Reading as well as with all ages at an arts fair. The designs print the mirror image of what is on the base plates and letters, words have to be done “backwards” in order to print correctly. This is a great problem solving experience. The provisional press (https://www.provisionalpress.com/) is made by an Indiana company. It is essentially a Letterpress proofing press made of wood and a PVC pipe. This makes it very accessible, affordable way to learn about printing with a press. The press can be used with various printing blocks (Lino, rubber, wood, Letterpress type and LEGO base plates) The participants use ink pads to put ink on their designs and then use their hands to push across the roller of the press to make an impression of their designs.

  • The Science of Reading @ the Public Library!

    • Presenter(s): Tammie Buchanan
    • Description: The world of reading instruction is going through a huge shift! As a public librarian, you might think that this is a topic only for school librarians, but that is not the case! Our country is in a crisis: too many children are not learning to read! How did this happen? How did we get here? What is this change to the Science of Reading mean? How can public libraries help? This session will give an overview of how the teaching of reading has changed over the years, explain what the Science of Reading is, and share ideas of things public libraries across the country are doing to help our developing readers and support our teachers. Participants will also brainstorm things they can do in their own libraries to support students as they learn to read.

  • Rosie Award Nominees for 2024-2025

    • Presenter(s): Emily Fox
    • Description: Members of the Rosie Committee are here to present the newest slate of nominations! The Rosie Committee meets in early March to determine nominations for the next year, so Youth Services Conference attendees will be the first to hear the 2024-2025 list. Come hear titles and a brief description of each book on the list and get excited to share them with your teens!

  • Community Building with Teens: It’s not a ladder, it’s a geodome.

    • Presenter(s): Lindsey Dunn
    • Description: Wondering how to move your teens from passive pedestrians to engaged members of your library? It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Teens can enter through many gateways based on their needs. Use the concept of customer personas to identify the different teens in your library and develop the programs, services, and conversation starters that work on each. You will hear about the nine most common types of teens that come to libraries and hear true stories of how one public librarian used this knowledge to build a community of engaged teens. Leave inspired and ready to develop your own plan. It’s not a ladder, it’s a geodome! This presentation uses a combination of show vs. application. The audience will learn about customer personas and how they can apply this exercise to teens. The presenter will also give them exercises they can bring home with them to apply the information to their own community of teens. This is not a sales presentation. Attendees do not need to have any previous knowledge of NoveList.
