2026 Statehouse Day Recap

Indiana Library Advocates Came Together at the Statehouse

On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Indiana Library Federation members and library supporters from across the state gathered at the Indiana Statehouse for ILF’s annual Statehouse Day. The event brought together librarians, trustees, and advocates to meet directly with legislators and champion the essential role libraries play in Indiana communities.

Throughout the day, participants shared their library stories and highlighted how Indiana libraries support early literacy, workforce readiness, small‑business development, broadband access, and community well‑being. These conversations reinforced the value of sustained investment in libraries and the importance of strong relationships between libraries and policymakers.

A Day Focused on Advocacy and Connection

Statehouse Day began with breakfast and networking, followed by scheduled meetings with Indiana senators and representatives. Attendees met with legislators who represent both their library districts and their home communities, helping to strengthen local connections and elevate library priorities through personal, one‑on‑one conversations.

This year’s approach emphasized direct engagement, encouraging participants to take an active role in scheduling meetings and building long‑term advocacy relationships that extend beyond a single day at the Statehouse.

Thank You to Our Advocates and Leaders

ILF extends sincere thanks to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and participated in thoughtful and sometimes challenging conversations with legislators. Advocacy like this is critical to ensuring libraries remain strong, accessible, and responsive to the needs of Hoosiers statewide.

Special recognition goes to Vanessa Martin and Julie Wendorf, 2026 Advocacy Committee Co‑Chairs, for their leadership and dedication in guiding Statehouse Day and supporting ILF’s advocacy efforts throughout the legislative session.

We are especially grateful to our Taft advocates, Mark Shublak and Chris Bandy, for helping attendees feel prepared and confident in their Statehouse advocacy efforts.

Looking Ahead

Statehouse Day is just one part of ILF’s ongoing advocacy work. The relationships built and conversations started on February 3 will continue to inform ILF’s efforts at the Statehouse and beyond. ILF encourages members to stay engaged, remain informed about legislative issues affecting libraries, and continue sharing the impact of libraries in their communities.
